Location: Room 134
From 1978 to 2002, photographer Frédéric Brenner travelled the world documenting Jewish life across the diaspora. On his journey, he discovered diverse, unexpected and quirky expressions of Jewish life, truly achieving his objective – to “break the emblematic representation of the Jew”. He also discovered some inescapable paradoxes of diaspora Jewish identity. In this session, we will explore these paradoxes through Brenner’s dramatic and richly layered photographs as well as traditional and contemporary Jewish texts.
