Organised Zionism in NZ started in 1903, only six years after the first Zionist Congress in Basel. It grew within the Jewish community to become central to social activity. The strength of Zionism in the 1940s and 1950s inspired many Kiwis to make aliyah, and sustained vigorous youth movements. Changing political environments both in Israel and in NZ over the 1970s to 1990s greatly affected the NZ Zionist movement.
