Hassidism, the Eastern European piety movement, has profoundly influenced the character of Judaism today. It first emerged in the eighteenth century by combining elements of the Jewish mysticism with folk culture and religion. We will examine the emergence of this highly diverse movement – the history and elements of its theology. The hour will be spent learning through a selection of texts leading us from early mysticism to the era of the Ba’al Shem Tov, the founder of Hassidism.
